FEMUSC em pauta

Astronaut conductor and musician-actors take children on a musical adventure at the 21st FEMUSC on January 17 and 24

The Unidentified Symphony Orchestra (OSNI) kicks off the festival’s Saturday schedule with the show “In Tune in Space” (Afinados no Espaço), a blend of classical music, theater, and humor featured in the Family Concerts series.

This Saturday, January 17, the 21st FEMUSC program begins in the morning with an event that is as unusual as it is familiar to festival regulars. Taking the stage at 10:30 AM at the SCAR Grand Theater is the OSNI—the Unidentified Symphony Orchestra—led by a fully costumed “astronaut conductor.”

The orchestra’s performance is part of the “Family Concerts” series, designed specifically for children of all ages and their companions. This initiative, which blends music and theater and has become a festival favorite, is playful and educational, aiming to introduce people to classical music in a lighthearted, fun way.

The story told by the musicians changes with every edition of FEMUSC. The creator behind these tales is Argentine screenwriter and Family Concerts coordinator Karina Barrionuevo. She faces a significant challenge: balancing a musical repertoire that fits the story while also providing a suitable challenge for the students who make up the orchestra and are attending the festival-school to learn.

This year, the story presented by OSNI is titled “In Tune in Space” and centers on the arrival of a new orchestra assistant: D.O.R.I.S., a “sonic intelligence” device (inspired by artificial intelligence). D.O.R.I.S. causes plenty of musical misunderstandings that delight the audience.

“As a musician, it is naturally very rewarding for me to hear the orchestra play, but looking out at an audience filled with children—attentive and enjoying the story—is truly wonderful,” says Karina.

Show continues on Saturday (24) with a tribute to Jaraguá do Sul

The show “Afinados no Espaço” (In Tune in Space) continues next Saturday, January 24, with Part 2. Also taking place at 10:30 AM at the SCAR Grand Theater, next week’s concert features an exclusively Brazilian repertoire and pays tribute to Jaraguá do Sul.

The story will introduce a new character: the city’s founder, portrayed by Luiz Lenzi, conductor of the FEMUSC Symphonic Band. Born in Timbó, Lenzi will conduct the orchestra for just one segment of the performance, dedicated to popular music and songs traditional to the region’s German immigrant community. “It will be like a Schützenfest on stage,” he remarks.

Musical Zoo: Another “Concerts for Families” Initiative

Before the orchestra performances—and also as part of the “Concerts for Families” program—the “Musical Zoo” takes place on two Saturdays at 10:00 AM. During this time, various instruments are set up throughout the SCAR Grand Theater, allowing people to get a close-up look at them.

“We call it a ‘zoo’ because these orchestral instruments seem like strange creatures to the audience, and the aim is precisely to encourage people to get up close to them,” says Alex Klein, Artistic Director of FEMUSC.

Tickets

Tickets for the OSNI performance are free and must be picked up at the SCAR box office (open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM) or obtained via the website femusc.com.br, with a limit of two tickets per person.

The 21st FEMUSC is presented under the Federal Government’s Rouanet Law for Cultural Project Incentives. It features Master Sponsorship from Itaú, Laranjinha Itaú, and WEG; sponsorship from DR Aromas & Ingredientes, Auroracoop, Grupo Elian, Zanotti Elásticos, and Porto de Itapoá; support from Master Operações Portuárias, Mime, Menegotti, Martinelli Advogados, and Unisociesc; and is organized by SCAR, FEMUSC, the Department of Culture, Sports and Leisure, and the Jaraguá do Sul City Hall.
