Program features classics by Villa-Lobos and Clara Schumann, alongside a musical performance inspired by a person with schizophrenia.
A highlight of the Santa Catarina International Music Festival (FEMUSC) program for Wednesday, January 14, is the performance of the famous Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 by composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. Often regarded as the anthem of Brazilian classical music, the piece will be performed by soprano Renata Bueno, accompanied by the FEMUSC viola ensemble.
The festival also offers the audience a chance to discover the work of 19th-century German composer Clara Schumann. Although her repertoire remains underexplored by many musicians, Clara is considered the greatest pianist of her generation. Her work will be performed by a trio of female musicians on violin, cello, and piano.
Both performances are part of the “Grand Concerts” series, starting at 8:30 PM at the SCAR Grand Theater.
“Momento Springmann” Piece Explores Mental Health Through Music
In addition to its major concerts, FEMUSC hosts a series of other performances between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM in various spaces at the SCAR center. One of these is the “Momento Springmann” series, dedicated to more experimental repertoire.
This is the case for the piece that Alex Klein, FEMUSC’s artistic director, will perform this Wednesday at 7:00 PM in SCAR’s Small Theater. “Estado Alterado” (Altered State) is a composition by Canadian artist Patricia Morehead, created in honor of her sister, who suffered from schizophrenia.
“Music isn’t just for entertainment; it carries a message. In classical music, one approach is to address serious subjects that are part of the human experience. My goal with this piece is to invite the audience to empathize and rethink taboos,” says Alex. The performance takes on added significance in January, a month marked by the “Janeiro Branco” (White January) campaign, which is dedicated to raising awareness about mental health care.
Ticket Pickup
Tickets for all FEMUSC performances are free and become available 48 hours prior to each performance series. They must be picked up at the SCAR box office (open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM) or obtained via the website femusc.com.br, with a limit of two tickets per person.
