The “Great Concerts” series lineup brings performances featuring works by prominent female composers and major 20th-century composers to the stage. Check out the full schedule.
The program for the 21st edition of the Santa Catarina International Music Festival (FEMUSC) in Jaraguá do Sul continues to be vibrant and eclectic this Tuesday, January 13.
The nightly highlight is the “Great Concerts” series, which brings impressive performances to the stage of the SCAR Grand Theater, featuring orchestras, chamber music, choirs, a symphonic band, and opera.
Today’s concert presents four different works to the audience, including a piece by French composer Louise Farrenc, who made music history by becoming the first woman to earn a salary equal to that of men in 1850s Paris. “She is very important to us, as we value diversity,” says Alex Klein, FEMUSC’s artistic director. The piece is performed by a trio of faculty members on piano, flute, and cello. One of them, Alexsander de Lara, is a London-based Brazilian who participated in the early editions of FEMUSC as a student and returns to the stage as a teacher.
Another highlight is the performance of a work by American composer Regina Baiocchi, written specifically for Alex Klein to perform on the bass oboe. The piece deals with resilience and draws inspiration from the “Negro spiritual,” a musical style created in the United States by enslaved people.
As for the string quartet also performing in the “Great Concerts” series, the audience can expect highly expressive performances and great technical mastery of works by major 20th-century composers.
Understanding Classical Music
Every night at 8:00 PM, prior to the Grand Concerts, FEMUSC artistic director Alex Klein and guests host “Musicalmente Falando” (Musically Speaking)—a brief chat with the audience designed to explain the evening’s program and provide context for the works and their composers. This activity is open to anyone holding a ticket for the Grand Concerts.
Beyond the Grand Concerts: Femusc Offers Seven Other Performance Series
The public program extends well beyond the Grand Concerts. Every day starting at 6:00 PM, Femusc launches a series of performances dedicated to specific instruments—such as piano, guitar, and strings—as well as experimental repertoires.
The schedule also features classical vocal recitals, where singers perform opera arias (solo works) for the audience, alongside chamber music recitals—concerts by small ensembles of up to 20 musicians playing string instruments (violin, viola, double bass, and cello).
Concerts take place simultaneously in various spaces at the SCAR complex. Outdoors, in the area between SCAR and ACIJS, the “Music Space” (Espaço da Música) is a new feature of this year’s edition. This area combines gastronomy—with food trucks—and musical performances, running daily from 6:30 PM. An important and inviting detail: the stage is open for anyone to perform.
Ticket Pickup
Tickets for all FEMUSC performances are free and become available 48 hours prior to each performance series. They must be picked up at the SCAR box office (open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM) or obtained via the website femusc.com.br, with a limit of two tickets per person.
The 21st FEMUSC is presented under the Federal Government’s Culture Incentive Law. It features Master Sponsorship from Itaú, Laranjinha Itaú, and WEG; sponsorship from DR Aromas & Ingredientes, Auroracoop, Grupo Elian, Zanotti Elásticos, and Porto de Itapoá; support from Master Operações Portuárias, Mime, Menegotti, Martinelli Advogados, and Unissocies; and is organized by SCAR, FEMUSC, the Department of Culture, Sports and Leisure, and the Jaraguá do Sul City Hall.
