FEMUSC em pauta

Maestro Roberto Duarte will teach orchestral conducting class at Femusc

The most disputed course at the festival has ten candidates per vacancy; Classes and presentations take place between January 15th and 28th

Carioca conductor Roberto Duarte participates in the 18th edition of the Santa Catarina International Music Festival (Femusc), held in Jaraguá do Sul, from January 8th to 28th. Recognized for his extensive artistic trajectory, Roberto Duarte was called to teach orchestral regency classes, considered by the FEMUSC organization to be the main course of its kind in Latin America.

“Maybe in Europe or the United States, young conductors have the chance to study with famous conductors and even climb in front of a professional orchestra”, says conductor Alex Klein, founder of Femusc. “But within our possibilities, what we do is something really fantastic and without comparison with other festivals in Brazil and Latin America”, he concludes.

The course, one of the most disputed at Femusc, has ten candidates per vacancy. Conducted from January 15th to 28th, classes include more than 12 hours of activities per day, with orchestral rehearsals and the opportunity to perform for the public.

Directed to musicians with basic knowledge of musical theory, the technique for conducting involves the study of movements, musical reading, perception, rhythm and tuning, among other skills that will be developed during the classes.

“It is not enough, therefore, to have classes on how to make a magic wand set a time in front of the orchestra. It is necessary to give young conductors opportunities to experience as many activities as possible within what is expected in a professional conductor career,” says Klein.

Roberto Duarte participates in FEMUSC for the first time and is considered one of the most important names in the regency in Brazil, having won several awards of high relevance in the national and international music scene. Among the main orchestras he directs outside the country are the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, the Ungarische Philharmonie, the Orchestre de la Radio Suisse Romande, the Slovak Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the Bruckner-Orchester Linz and the Tchaikowsky Symphony Orchestra Moscow.

Recognized as the largest school festival in Latin America, the 2023 FEMUSC has the involvement of 900 musicians – including teachers and students. Of these, 72 are renowned musicians, such as Simon Bernardini, a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, violinist Débora Wanderley, singer Jane Duboc and gaucho accordionist Renato Borghetti.

Most Brazilian teachers come from São Paulo, followed by musicians from Santa Catarina and Paraná. Foreigners are 40, 18 arrive from the United States and the rest from countries in Europe, South America, Central America and Oceania.
