Students from African countries disembark in Jaraguá do Sul for the 20th FEMUSC

Young people from Guinea Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe will take classes in trumpet, drums, percussion, violin, double bass and lyrical singing; Completely free festival takes place from January 12th to 25th

Among the participants of more than 27 nationalities of the Santa Catarina International Music Festival (Femusc), 14 of them come from countries on the African continent. Young DE  Guinea Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe participate as students of the 20th edition of FEMUSC. This year, the event features more than 600 works in 200 shows completely free of charge. The FEMUSC takes place from January 12 to 25, at Scar, in Jaraguá do Sul (SC).

The arrival of the students has the personal effort of the creator and artistic director of the festival, conductor Alex Klein. in October,  The conductor organized a crowdfunding to be able to financially support students interested in participating.  

“In addition to some students from Mozambique and the Stellenbosch String Quartet of South Africa, who participated in the festival a few years ago, this will be the first time we will receive such a significant number of students from the African continent”, says the conductor. “A more than expected and important moment to encourage diversity and inclusion,  fundamental missions for FEMUSC”, he added.. 

Of the 14 students,  Four are women. Jorgina Có da Silva and Milagre Antònio Cò, from Guinea Bissau; Yara de Carvalho and Carla Cutana, both from Mozambique. All are singers and will take singing lessons with the teachers of the opera and lyrical singing program at FEMUSC,  Celine Imbert, Ana Hasler, André dos Santos and Guenko Guerchev.  

Of the 10 male students, he also participates in the lyrical singing classes, the Mozambican Alfredo Moisés Matine. in the percussion classes,  Wilson da Silva, Assimio Bari, Adulai Jaló, Alimo Djaló and Alseine Culubali, all from Guinea Bissau, will be. from Mozambique,  Pierre Timbé will take double bass;  Moses Cossa by Violin; and Altino Munguambe, clarinet. the only representative from São Tomé and Príncipe,  Clismar Carvalho, signed up for trumpet classes.

20 years

The 20th edition of FEMUSC works once again with superlative numbers. They are members of more than 27 nationalities who will,  During 14 days, divide the experience and the stage into performances of classical music,  operas and MPB.

For maestro Alex Klein,  During these 20 years, FEMUSC has fulfilled the role of showing the importance of producing relevant festivals outside the Rio-São Paulo axis, Buenos Aires, Mexico City.  “Whoever goes to Germany, France, England or the US East Corridor observes that there are opera houses, large conservatories and large orchestras within an hour or two of travel from any point,” says Klein.  “What therefore happens in Latin America is a constant intellectual separation between the few privileged cities and vast regions where young musicians literally study their instruments by watching YouTube videos”, he concludes.

SCAR Cultural Center 

The shows take place mainly at the Scar Cultural Center. capable of serving an audience  Of three thousand people daily in its five auditoriums, SCAR has 10 thousand m2, spread over six floors. All environments are air-conditioned, with investments for the best acoustic quality and scenic lighting.

A part of FEMUSC’s presentations also take place in schools, hospitals and  penitentiaries.  “Jaraguá do Sul is totally involved in the music,  it will be two weeks of a lot of art, a lot of emotion. Be sure to participate”, invites the conductor.
