The Argentine clarinetist, Angélica Meza, is one of the highlights of the FEMUSC International Festival, which takes place in Santa Catarina, Brazil, until January 29. The first musician in the country to specialize in an old clarinet, Meza presented to the Brazilian public during the event an excerpt from the concert for Mozart’s clarinet, with a replica of the instrument of the time with an Austrian composer.
In one of the shows, the clarinetist performed a duet with maestro Alex Klein, artistic director of Femusc, showing the difference and sound sensitivity of the old clarinet compared to the sound of a current piano.
According to Angélica Meza, the difference between the old and the modern model is the material used in the manufacture and the amount of musical notes. “The old clarinet has a lot of sensitivity and is similar to the human voice and we managed to show it to the lay public”, says Angélica, much applauded after playing the instrument.
Meza has played the clarinet since he was 11 years old and started in music at the National Institute of Corrientes (Argentina). He met the old clarinet 5 years ago and learned the instrument as a self-taught, then moved to The Hague, Holland, to continue his studies formally. He completed his Masters in Historical Clarinet at the Royal Conservatory of Hague and currently lives in the Netherlands. It is currently sponsored by the Mount Parnassus Foundation, Calgary, Canada, dedicated to the inclusion of professional women in orchestras and old music groups.
The musician will make a new presentation with the clarinet at the Ópera Bodas de Fígaro, next Friday, January 28, at Femusc. The presentation will be broadcast live on the festival channel on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/institutofemusc
