The Santa Catarina International Music Festival (Femusc) is for everyone, and throughout its trajectory, it has developed projects that embrace the most different ages and phases of life.
In order to create a seed that could be watered throughout the year, continuing this musical atmosphere, Femusckinho and Femusc Jovem were born, two of the main musical initiation projects of the event, which is considered the largest school festival in Latin America.
According to the pedagogical coordinator of Femusc’s social projects, Vera Possari, Femusckinho has been taking place for 15 years, and several students who have passed through the project today are great musicians and work professionally in the area.
Femusckinho has an aura of a musical vacation colony. And, for many little ones, it is a first contact with the musical instrument. To participate, children do not need to have knowledge of music, only the will to live this experience. There are about 80 students, from six to 12 years old, and the experiences are different for each age group.
Until the age of nine, the little ones have contact with recorder classes, children’s musicalization, body percussion and choir. And from nine to 12 years old, they are already starting the experiment with orchestra instruments, such as violin, cello, viola, and double bass, which are made available by SCAR.
“Here they have the first contact with all these instruments, and they choose which one they want to learn to play. live this incredible world of music”, says the coordinator.
The benefits of femusckinho go far beyond what you can see. The coordinator also points out that music has the power to, in addition to touching the heart of those who listen, enhance the cognitive, behavioral, and even motor issue of children.
Little Arthur Lorenzo Maia da Silva, 7, is super excited, as it is the second time he participates in the project. “Here I learn to play the instruments, and I also make several friends. We have fun.” He also made a point of saying that he learned about discipline and respect. “The teacher helps us and we need to respect him, because he teaches us many new things”, he added.
Isabelli Kanzler, 9 years old, who participates for the first time in Femusckinho, said that the recorder classes have been a lot of fun, and that she is really enjoying learning. “We also relax and sing here in the classes, and when we rehearse for the presentation it gives a cold in the stomach.
Young Femusc is another step towards professional life
The FEMUSC Jovem program is a step further, and is aimed at young people aged between 12 and 17, and who already have contact with music in some way. To participate, students must be inserted in the musical context, that is, in a group, band or quartet, for example. It is an improvement project that enhances learning, and leads students to a possible professional life in the music world.
The coordinator Vera highlights that Femusc Jovem started in 2015, with the idea of giving the opportunity for students who participated to Femusckinho to continue their trajectories. “We have several examples of people who have passed through this path and today they are playing in large orchestras in the state, for example, and who continue to live the femusckinho being teachers of the little ones”, he adds.
Alicia Schiochet, 18, is an example. At the age of 8, she and her sister Laís participated for the first time in Femusckinho, and over the years they arrived at Femusc Jovem. According to her, the seed of music was planted with this experience, which makes them inserted in the musical context to this day. “Music has changed our life and is very present in our daily lives. We learn a lot here, it is an incredible experience, that’s why we make a point of participating every year”, says Alicia.
