Festival MPB course attracts musicians from 7 countries; Students make daily presentations in Jaraguá do Sul (SC)
The 20th Santa Catarina International Music Festival, in Jaraguá do Sul (SC), 20% of the students of the Brazilian Popular Music Course (MPB) are foreigners. Musicians from countries such as Italy, Canada, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Costa Rica came to the event to learn about the Brazilian musical genre, participating in singing classes and instruments.
During classes, students have the opportunity to study with Brazilian teachers and perform daily MPB presentations, open to the public. The course offers vacancies for workshops on Brazilian popular music instruments, in the modalities of singing, piano, drums, winds, guitar/guitar, bass and accordion.
Costa Rican Yosafath Arguedas Fonseca is on the course to study piano within the context of MPB. “In my country, Brazilian music is not very well known and as it has great wealth, with many types of instruments, I wanted to understand better”, he says. During the daily concerts, he interprets hits such as “Se Eu Querer com Deus”, by Gilberto Gil, and “Carinhoso”, by Braguinha and Pixinguinha.
The MPB course is coordinated by Marcelo Ghelfi, pianist, conductor, arranger and teacher from São Paulo and was incorporated into the festival in the 2023 edition. According to Ghelfi, the classes of MPB value the past and present of Brazilian music. “What we do here is to bring to our Brazilian students what was not from their generation and to value what we have today. Foreign students come with the same purpose.”
In this edition, FEMUSC 2025 brings together 350 musicians from 27 countries.
