Shows set up for the festival will be performed in the SCAR auditorium in Jaraguá do Sul; Harry Silverstein comes from the US to FEMUSC exclusively for the direction of one of the productions
Between the 8th and 28th of January, Jaraguá do Sul, in the north of Santa Catarina, is the stage of FEMUSC – Santa Catarina International Music Festival, considered the largest school festival in Latin America. In its 18th edition, the event will feature more than 200 shows and, for the first time, the public will be able to see three major operas with important names from the national and international scene. All shows will be free and tickets will be available at the Teatro Scar box office.
On January 13, the staging of the work “The Passion according to Saint Matthew” (Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Secundum Evangelistam Matthaeum), one of the most important contributions by J. S. Bach, opens the series of presentations. Considered one of the most extraordinary sacred works of all time, it was written in 1727 to be presented on Good Friday, in the church of Leipzig.
“The work, in fact an “oratory”, made to be sung in concert. Children’s Choir (from “Angels”), Apostle Pedro, Pilate”, explains conductor Alex Klein, founder of Femusc.
The show will be directed by the dramatic soprano singer, actress and teacher Céline Ibert de Figueiredo and the participation of Jabez Lima (Evangelista Matheus); Alvarenga Diniz (Jesus); Lorena Millar (Maria Madalena); Yunuen Flores (Maria).
The program has the participation of the Coral and the Baroque Orchestra of Femusc and the Children’s Coral of Femusckinho.

On January 20th, the public will be able to watch the opera “The Truths of Orpheus”, with music by Claudio Monteverdi and Cristoph Willibald Gluck. With stage direction by Mezzo-Soprano Argentina Raquel Winnica Young and Luis Antonio Gonzalez in the musical direction.
“The Truths of Orpheus” will be presented in its two versions. The version of Claudio Monteverdi (1600) was the first opera and tells the Greek legend where the passionate and desolate hero descends to hell to seek his deceased bride, Euridice. Christoph Gluck’s version ends the story with the execution of Trionfi Amore!, one of the most beautiful melodies of classical music.
The third opera “Hansel & Gretel” by the German composer Engelbert Humperdinck (1854–1921) promises to please adults and children on January 27. Inspired by the famous fairy tale of the brothers Grimm, it details the famous story of João and Maria. The show will be directed by Harry Silverstein, who comes from the USA to Femusc exclusively for this production. The musical direction is by André Santos.
To bring three professional shows to the public, in a short period of time, FEMUSC has a specialized professional team, with costume designers, scenographers, Translators, technicians, illuminators, co-repeater pianists, a gigantic structure worthy of large productions. The result is that the festival has been expanding in this area and the public is increasingly dazzling with the technical capacity of the shows.
“Performing three operas in a period of 20 days is a great challenge, only possible due to the dedication, commitment, creativity and professionalism of our teachers and students”, concludes Klein.
